Kay Stratman

Kay Stratman's two passions are Asian brush painting and American wild and rural landscapes. She often paints on location, which encourages spontaneity, then takes her impressions of it back to the studio, where she is free to depart from reality, painting the essence of the subject matter. Combining carefully placed. diffused colors with contrasting bold brush strokes is something she calls " controlled spontaneity." Her materials are bamboo handle brushes, ink, watercolor and absorbent rice paper or gold and silver colored boards called "shikishi" board. Lately her focus has been P'O Mo translated "ink splash" though an ancient Chinese technique, the results look contemporary. Thickened watercolor is pored onto the shikishi board surface and allowed to bleed, blend, then dry. Kay continues the painting by defining areas with brushwork to reveal a more recognizable image, usually a landscape. Now living in Jackson WY, Kay grew up in Minnesota. She is an award winning member of the Sumi-e Society of America
