Janice Mclean JANICE MCLEAN Born in the small town of Trail, in the Kootenay district of B.C., Janice's earliest impressions were from a childhood amongst the mountains, lakes and rivers. She graduated from the Academic Fine Arts, at a high school level, not knowing the direction her life would soon take. The biggest influence would be from a trip to visit her sister in Holland in the late 70s. Janice studied the art in the museums and churches and it was the 17th century Dutch Masters, Vermeer and Rembrandt, that laid the foundation for a life in the arts. After her 1 year residence in Holland she return to Canada to began her career as an artist full time. Janice made a living by Oil painting, Stained Glass and Sandblasting. She returned to college in the late 80s to further her studies in the commercial field of Graphic Design and Electronic Publishing for 2 years at Selkirk College in Castleger. Janice acquired the knowledge of many illustrative and printing techniques in gouache, India ink, silk screening, offset lithography and photography. Janice left the Kootenay area and moved to the West Coast in 1992 were she applied her skills in a commercial application of Graphic Design for 8 years. In 1999 she started her own business in Graphic Design and Giclee printing and naturally added a Fine Art Gallery for the next 7 years. Janice combined her art and computer experience in a creative Giclee printing application that was uncharted in the late 90s. Her talent was quickly recognized and her corporate clients included E.A. Sports, Clearly Canadian, Intrawest, MGM Pictures, Paramount Studios, Showtime Network NY, Warner Bros., Falls View Casino, Princess Cruislines, BC Hydro, Telus, UBC, the National Gallery of Canada and the Government of Canada. In 2006 Janice returned to her painting, full time and her years of training have merged to produce a unique art style that combines a base of marble dust and gold leafing with charcoal, acrylic and oil glazes up to 100 layers to achieve a depth of colour that interplays with the light across the canvas. She captures the essence of the subject with the use of textures, atmospheric colour and lighting to create an old world feeling with a Contemporary edge. In 2009, Janice returned to Europe to study Egg Tempera and Fresco in Florence, Italy. This was her first formal training in the age old Italian painting techniques. In Italy, Janice was surrounded by works of her favorite artistic giants, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Donatello, Bernini and Raphael. This furthered her expertise and was quickly applied to her Italian landscapes and urban street scenes. Janice has interest from Galleries in Florence and is preparing work for exhibition in the Fall of 2010. click to see larger image
