Dan Stoklasa Dan creates unique and one of a kind wood burl and antler sculptures. He only uses burls from downed trees and does not cut down any trees for his work. He also only uses shed antlers Several years ago , Dan worked as a ranch hand in Angel Fire, New Mexico, and wanted to buy a saddle from an artist on the ranch. The artist made lamps and bookend out of wood burls. Since Dan did not have the money to buy the saddle, the artist offered to trade the saddle for wood burls and elk shed that needed to be found. Dan searched and found enough burls and shed to trade for the saddle, and was intrigued by the finished lamps the artist made. He then made his first bowl which took him almost a year to complete. After moving to Idaho a couple years later, Dan experimented with different techniques and perfected his art to sculpt each burl entirely with hand tools and then apply a non-toxic coating which results in a high gloss, water resistant finish. Each piece takes Dan months to find the right burl and antlers, design the piece, sculpt and finish. click to see larger image |
